UND head coach Brad Berry chats about Scott Arniel being named Winnipeg Jets bench boss
Most hockey players are loathe to talk about themselves and that sentiment often continues when they get into coaching. So we enlisted current UND Fighting Hawks head coach Brad Berry this past Saturday on the Illegal Curve Hockey Show to provide us with insight into new Jets head coach Scott Arniel who was his former teammate and colleague on the bench.
Berry and Arniel played together on the Jets 1.0 during the 1985-86 season and then Berry joined Arniel's staff as an assistant first with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL in 2006-07 and then when Scott made the jump to the NHL with Columbus in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Berry has spent the last 12 years (nine as head coach) of one of the most storied college hockey teams in the United States just down the road in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Topics:
1) When the news came out that Arniel was named head coach, what was his reaction?
2) Looking back at the time with the Blue Jackets, what did they learn? (1:36)
3) Importance of a coach having knowledge of the AHL (4:32)
4) Evolving as a coach (6:01)
5) How much stock can be put in Arniel's time as bench boss when Rick Bowness was away? (8:08)
6) The players embracing Scott Arniel in the end of season media, importance of continuity (10:13)
7) Transitioning from an assistant/associate coach to the head coach (11:48)
8) Focus on analytics (13:22)
9) Facing his son Bauer in a couple of years when he's playing for St. Thomas (15:07)
10) Would he be interested in a role on the Jets bench this season? (16:17)
11) Excitement to have Mac Swanson joining UND (17:24)

End of 2023-24 season Manitoba Moose media availability | Nicholas Jones

Edmonton product Nicholas Jones finished up the second year of a two-year AHL deal with the Moose. He played in 23 fewer games in 2023-24 than he did the year prior (dealt with two concussions this season) but managed to almost match his points totals (fell short by one point) and actually doubled his goals this past season going from three to six. We spoke to the fifth year pro about the year ...
End of 2023-24 season Manitoba Moose media availability | C.J. Suess

The Simpsons line "That's it back to Winnipeg" was clearly the thinking for Jets draft pick C.J. Suess who was selected way back in the 2014 draft. He had left for the San Jose organization during the 2022-23 season (he got into one game with the Sharks) and then chose to return to Manitoba on a two-year deal with the Moose which he signed last July. Much like the team he had a slow start with ...

Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba we heard from defenceman Ashton Sautner, who now calls Alberta home during the offseason, after he completed his second full season with the Moose. It was a one-year deal with the Jets which saw him play 65 games for the Moose as he helped guide the next generation of prospect Dmen. He spent a lot of time with 2020 6th rounder Tyrel Bauer but also alongside 2019 2nd ...
End of 2023-24 season Manitoba Moose media availability | Dominic Toninato

Don't think anybody in the Jets organization went up to the NHL and down to the AHL this season more than Dominic Toninato who ended up playing 15 games for Winnipeg in the NHL and 37 games for Manitoba in the AHL. He had one goal during his time with the Jets this season (which turned out to be the game-winning goal) in his home state of Minnesota during an intense home-and-home series between...
End of 2023-24 season Manitoba Moose media availability | Daniel Torgersson
Переглядів 4428 днів тому
It was a disappointing 2023-24 season for Jets 2020 2nd rounder Daniel Torgersson as the big Swedish forward had an opportunity to build on a rookie season last year which saw him score 11 goals along with nine assists in 69 games for Manitoba. Instead he played in fewer games (52) and was only able to score one goal while adding eight assists this season. But not all paths are linear which mea...

NNo player had a more Jekyll and Hyde season then big Finnish centre Henri Nikkanen who was still doing good things early in the season but just couldn't get rewarded on the scoresheet. This resulted in his being in the lineup for a game and then sitting the next. After going pointless through 35 games, on March 2nd which was appropriately Hockey Day in Finland he finally got his first point wh...

I blame everything on fucking Chevy
Wow just another Jets drafted player and maybe trade the Jets player on the team not future
Rutger does not want to play in winnipeg because its winnipeg. It has nothing to do with anything else. SHOCKER american born player not wanting to play in a market on most players no trade list. Trade him. Could probably get something good.
I haven't got through the whole pod yet but I think Carolina is asking for mcgroarty as part of a deal for Necas
I would trade KC before I would trade McGroarty!
This appears to be a player who’s NOT saying I don’t want to play in Winnipeg! What he’s saying is I don’t want to play for this organization as it’s currently constructed. And I suspect he just takes a look at perfett, laine, and heinola as evidence. If the jets screw this up it really shows how inept their draft and develop concept is.
Embarrassing. Jets can’t see the value of giving promising young players NHL minutes over journeyman. Heinola’s journey as a prime example. Rutger could easily be an impact player by game 82 if he’s allowed to play, but because he’s not better than a guy like Appleton by game 1, he won’t get the opportunity.
Exactly! Dinosaur logic being applied to the modern nhl. The fact is he will make mistakes and his skating isn’t up to snuff but the potential and not to mention the charisma, enthusiasm, and leadership is oozing from him!! This could be a colossal mistake. How can true north absolutely destroy a great relationship with a kid so fast and come back to us fans and say we are a draft and develop franchise when they have struggled mightily to develop anyone in the last number of years?
Seriously like what the hell we just drafted the guy and he already wants out what a pathetic piece of crap organization we have it’s bad enough, the bomber 0 and three
CAN ANYONE REALLY SEE LOWRY , SCHEIFELE, CONNOR, ARNIEL LIFTING A STANLEY CUP. NO WAY. CAN'T SEE IT. LAST TIME WINNIPEG WAS A CHAMPIONSHIP CITY, WAS WHEN THEY WON THE AVCO CUP. HECK, THE ORIGINAL WINNIPEG JETS ARE GOING TO BE IN UTAH!!!! THEY WILL WIN IN UTAH! BUT, WINNIPEG IS FULL OF LOSERS.

Great show, thank you guys. Anyone that thinks we have the horses to win cup in next two years is Very optimistic. If Jets take a step back, inject some youth, rebuild the back end, there might be a chance in 4 years. Need players like Konecny, Bennett, that will scratch and claw to win. Also Hellebuyck needs to play up to headline clippings. He needs to play like Bobrovsky in the playoffs, not like Skinner.
Paying Mason Appleton after this year with another contract would be a huge mistake.
I think that Ehlers trade will Carolina for Necas could maybe work out with both teams 😎🆗️
Always nice to hear Adam kimelman
GOOD STUFF CREW BUT STILL NOT SURE ABOUT DREW LOL NECAS IS YOUNGER AS FAST N PLAYS SOME CNTR SOOO OK ONE FOR ONE BUT STILL GOTTA FIND THAT STUD RHD I SAID WKD AGO SIGN EHLERS N MOVE KFC N APPLEZ OR AI IN PACKAGE FOR A CARLO ORRRR
The fact that they can’t attract any free agents means they’ll never win Stanley cup
Necas is younger, plays center and is blazing fast. More than a good exchange for Ehlers. Ehlers and Scheifele personalty wise are like oil and water - just don’t mix.
The second line for most of last season was Namestnikov, Ehlers, Perfetti ... and all those players are under contract as we speak... the second line is intact. I would never count rental players as regulars the next season. If Mone comes back great.
Yup. Save cap and if you need another 2nd line center make a trade next winter.
GOOD STUFF BUT JT ON THIN ICE COUNTN OUT TY SO QYIK LOL N F DA OIL 🎉😂
Good evening evening. I need a shot of Fire 🔥 ball
You are still advertising the JC dinner May 28th
Let’s hope Drew fixes that by next weekend.
Great segment with Jamie... Positively hilarious!!
if the Jets want to ensure that Rutger signs his ELC at the end of this coming season, they should look at hiring Brandon Naurato as an assistant coach. Brandon has taken the Wolverines to the Frozen Four the first 2 years with Michigan. He obviously can communicate and coach the younger players, which would be fantastic for the Jets with the likes of Perfetti, Lambert, McGroarty, Barlow, Salomonsson, Reichel, Zhilkin, Lucius, Ford..etc... I think this would be a fantastic hire for the Jets, both for the now and the future.
Interesting option. Especially with all the NCAA players in the ranks.
Calvin Pickard saved the Oilers bacon.
Not watching the final but will say last year BOB didn’t bounce back from the break Panthers had before the final and the ice in Florida is bad in any season but now summer weather will make it even worse. So flip a coin for those games.
Hey Drew and Dave... got to the show a little late today but I've listened to it in it's entirety, always my favorite thing to do on Saturdays. :)
As always we appreciate your support Phyllis. Hope you had a great weekend.
I Really enjoyed the show today.
Thank you. We appreciate it.
Locking up monahan for anything longer than 2 years would be nuts! Although he is a decent stop gap measure he is not a guy who will push you over the edge come crunch time! That was evident during the playoffs. Time to look elsewhere or give a younger guy a chance. That’s how you learn and take the next step.
That’s why they call July 1st “silly season”
I watched the interview. Ehlers didnt say much about his situation in that danish local tv interview, and i doubt anyone will get him to do that. He has a good character. He said he does follow the rumour mill on social media and think it is fun to follow, but is just home to relax here in Aalborg. He didnt make it seem like he wanted to leave, nor that he was unhappy. That was what I got out of it
Thank you for watching and giving an update. Appreciate it.
Let's go Florida! No cup for Kane.
The penalty kill was poor. Now they've hired the guy who was in charge of it as head coach. Expect more empty seats & poor playoff performances (if they make it).
Worth noting the PK (under the same coach) the year before was 7th best in the NHL.
WHAT A SITUATION! - LET'S GO BRANDON; AND TRUCK TURDEAU!! - AND DON'T FORGET GUYS: I'VE GOT YOUR BLOODY BACKS! BIG, NAY MAD UPS!!! RGB-Y4 OUT!!
If Arniel is all in on analytics, I don't see how Cheveldayoff trades Ehlers.
Dave; how about Simon Lundmark for Right side D for Jets?
The coaching staff was quite pleased with his jump this season. Moose head coach Mark Morrison said this “If you look at his growth from last year to this year it was huge”.
The interrupting Minuk Moose Minute bumper makes me laugh every time. No surprise that Killjoy Mindell wants to put an end to that 😂
It did make me chuckle as I wasn’t expecting it.
5 million for demelo? Hard lessons have to be learned with respect to overpaying ( see pionk and Schmidt) compliments 44 well but in truth he’s a good 3rd pair guy. 2 playoffs in a row where we’ve seen demelo get torched and pushed around in the playoffs.
Scott Arniel was a disaster in Columbus. Expecting True North to make his wife Jets Athletic Therepist. 🙄
Such a Winnipeg thing to do They are loyal to a fault Chevy should have been fired a 5 years ago. It’s Chipman. He’s too loyal and kind in a cut-throat business of winning
Chevy is one of the best GMs in the league.
Did Arniel smile even once?
Dreadful in Columbus, expect the same here. Mike Commodore has nothing good to say about Scott Arniel.
One of the best defense players in the Swedish SHL this season, although he still was a junior. Fantastic skater. Solid defense and an offensive edge as well.
Thanks for the scouting report. He looked good in last season’s training camp and we had heard he had an excellent season in the SHL. Should be good to see what he can do this upcoming season.
Why is Chevy still here?
Another great presser IC. Thanks!
Glad you liked! Thanks for the comment.
He’s the right guy for this job. We need to tweak a couple things but I think we’re very close to being a really good playoff team. We need to get rid some players and get some size. Continue to push the importance of defence and speed but add size and continue to draft well. Go jets!
It will be interesting to look back in a year and see how it all plays out. But he sure sounded like a guy who’s learned from his first experience as a head coach and is ready to implement changes this time around.
Thanks IC, great Chevy presser
Arm was getting a bit tired as I left the tripod about 50ft away. But glad you enjoyed.
Don't think Mike Commodore likes you to much 😅
He definitely let his feelings be known.
Scott mentioned when he has a staff they will sit down. So lauer is gone?
Yep he”s gone
Yup they mutually agreed to part ways. So they now have two spots to fill.
Cannot find anywhere did Chevy say what Arniel's contract term?
Until he quits like Maurice.
He didn’t confirm it yet.
Chevy: I think I’ll speak to at least ten candidates. Chipman: Make sure you offer Scott Arniel the job before you do all that. Chevy: Right on Boss!
Very likely, that's True North. 😄
Illegal Curve Hockey, This is great! Let's be friends and have fun together!
